The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program –SNAP– benefits applications and renewals could be a real challenge for some beneficiaries. Especially for those who are in their 60s or those people who have a disability. So, this application process leaves them at a disadvantage.
In order to help those who might struggle with this SNAP application process senators in Indiana have passed a bill to make things easier for those seniors or people with a disability. Doing it online or by phone is not possible for some low-income seniors.
Unfortunately, this bill will not go into effect until July 1, 2023, despite being passed this February. So SNAP beneficiaries need to wait a little longer to see this change become real.
What is the new renewal period for SNAP benefits for seniors and people with disability?
When this new bill goes into effect, people with disability and seniors will not have to renew their SNAP application for three years. Not only will this measure make their lives easier, but it will also save time and money on administrative tasks.
Besides, many eligible people refuse to apply to get SNAP food benefits. There are several reasons though. It could be because they believe there is a lot of paperwork and that the amount they would receive might be too low.
Some people cannot hear properly when they have an interview either face to face or by phone, others may not understand the forms and others might find it hard to wait at the SNAP office for a long time or cannot move from their house to get there.
What else has this bill changed?
Those receiving Medicaid benefits will receive information regarding their SNAP eligibility. Although it was previously done, it has now become a law. In this way, they will be informed.
It will be the Indiana Division of Family Resources through the Family and Social Services Administration. They are in charge of using data matching to inform eligible beneficiaries.
Just a final reminder, SNAP beneficiaries should be aware of the fact that they should still inform of their income every 12 months or when their income changes. Do not forget to do that to be able to continue enjoying your SNAP food benefit. Not doing so could make you lose these Food Stamps. Moreover, it is not good at all for your financial situation.
