If an applicant does not qualify for an SSN, another form of identification will be required to verify their personal information, depending on the alternative card issuer and the type of card applied for.

  • The two most popular card issuers for applicants without SSNs are American Express and Citibank. However, since these are foreign card issuers, credit activities outside the United States are taken into account.
  • If you do not have an SSN, the most common alternative is to use an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN).
  • Most credit card issuers that accept card applications without an SSN request the ITIN as an alternative. In addition to other documents required to verify an applicant’s identity, such as B. A copy of a U.S. passport and/or visa.
  • Some banks may also require that the applicant have a relationship with them before applying for a credit card, i.e. an existing checking or savings account.
