Why will SSDI users not receive SSI in April?

Top reasons why Social Security checks do not arrive on time

Since the United States Social Security Administration’s payment schedule follows a very definite schedule, it is easy to know when the Administration will finally send out a monthly check. This makes life much easier for U.S. citizens living on just the Social Security check.

However, there are some irregularities in the schedule that causes us to miss checks in some months. This means that Social Security will not send us the same number of checks every month. These changes affect Supplemental Security Income, not retirement or disability payments.

So if you have Supplemental Security Income as your source of income in the United States, you may be interested to know that some months you will not receive this cheque. However, there is nothing to worry about, as Social Security will send out a check for the month sooner or later. But keep in mind that we can’t count on that money in a few months.

In what months will I not get SSI from Social Security?

The day Social Security sends checks to SSI recipients is always the 1st of the month. For that reason, it is very easy to keep track of the timing of these payments. This is usually the case, although there is one exception.

When the 1st of each month is not a work day, i.e., a holiday or weekend, Social Security does not send out a check on that day. So we cannot expect to receive that amount of money on the 1st of each month. Instead, the Administration will send the check on the immediately preceding business day.

This means that there are months when Social Security sends us two SSI checks and other months when they don’t send us an SSI check at all. In the end, every month we end up with the same amount of dollars in our pockets, but sometimes we find ourselves with the money sooner. These are the months with irregularities in the timing of Social Security SSI payments in 2023:

  • January
  • April
  • July
  • October

Therefore, in those months the 1st of each month is a holiday or weekend. So the Social Security Administration sends out the check early. If we have Direct Deposit activated we will find ourselves with two SSI checks in the same month.

However, if we receive the benefit money through Direct Deposit we will find that the money will arrive on the same day as usual, with no advances.
