By now, all United States citizens know that the IRS tax season has already started. Therefore, any of the taxpayers can send their tax refund to the IRS offices in order to fulfill their tax obligations.

However, there is a part of the taxpayers that should wait before sending this documentation. These users are those who received a one-time payment during the past year. If you received a one-time tax payment from the state last year, you should watch out.

Do not file your tax filling yet. This one-time payment may influence the tax refund, so do not execute any option to send the tax filling to the IRS yet.

Why do I have to wait before making the tax refund?

The IRS has not yet determined 100% whether or not these one-time payments should be included on the tax refund. For many taxpayers, these one-time state payments are a big change to the tax refund. For that reason, there is a bit of a wait.

The IRS‘s own offices have stated that “There are a variety of state programs that will distribute these payments in 2022, and the rules surrounding them are complex. For taxpayers uncertain about the taxability of their state payments, the I.R.S. recommends they wait until additional guidance is available or consult with a reputable tax professional.” This information can be found in an officially published Statment.

Until when can I file my tax return?

In case we did not have any one-time state tax payments last year, there is no problem to file the tax refund. So don’t worry if that is your case and file your tax refund as soon as possible.

The deadline to make this tax filling is April 18, 2023. Therefore, we still have plenty of time. However, remember that the sooner we do this tax refund the sooner we will receive the tax return. That is in case the IRS has to pay us this money in cash.

And also remember that if we activate Direct Deposit we will have a faster and safer payment. If we do not activate it, we will receive the tax refund by means of a check in our mailbox, but it will take much more time and it could even get lost on the way.
