After having become the star home remedy against everyday health problems in many homes around the world, scientists have wanted to find some scientific evidence to support the bicarbonate of soda popularity.
Among all the studies that have been carried out regarding sodium bicarbonate against diseases, we can say that some of them have had convincing results and others the opposite. On this occasion we are in front of a study project where its efficacy against autoimmune diseases was proved.
How can we know what an autoimmune disease is?
All the organs and cells in the human body have a specific use within the overall objective, which is to protect the organism that pose a risk to maintain proper functioning.
However, it can sometimes happen that an disequilibrium appears within this same system and the organs and cells themselves end up attacking the healthy cells of the body. When this happens we are facing an autoimmune disease.
Long short story, autoimmune diseases appear in the body when it is the own body that acts against itself and bicarbonate of soda can give a little help.
What is the result of this study?
The research that the Augusta University School of Medicine has carried out, financed by the National Institutes of Health, gave the formula to use bicarbonate of soda as a supplement if taken daily, contributing to the control of some autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis among others.
It is true that it cannot be said that the results derived from the study are not entirely conclusive, since they require further evaluation, but it is the first step with good indicators to confirm the positive effects of bicarbonate of soda in reducing the inflammation presented by rheumatoid arthritis, also helping to control part of its symptoms.
The key to all this is the mesothelial cells, which respond to the intake of bicarbonate of soda. When this remedy reaches the stomach, the mesothelial cells begin their function of controlling what happens in the intestine, then alerting the organs in control of the immune system.
What was found?
Inside the spleen, kidneys and blood we can find immune cells called macrophages. These cells usually increase inflammation when they are M2. But after ingesting bicarbonate of soda for two weeks, the scientists were able to observe that the inflammatory processes were reduced when they became M1.
Suggestions
It is not entirely clear that bicarbonate of soda is really efficient and safe in combating this type of disease. The results, for the moment, are being good, but more studies are needed to find more evidence to support this fact.
However, it should be said that it is of vital importance to talk to a medical specialist before starting any kind of home treatment, since he/she will be able to advise us to avoid any kind of problems.
In conclusion, we can say that bicarbonate of soda does not replace any medical treatment, of course, but it can be very useful if we know how to use it properly.
