So, if we want to have a good golden years with enough money to pay for everything without worry, we should keep these two steps in mind. While there are certainly other elements that make for a good and better retirement, maximizing our Social Security check makes for a more peaceful life.

As we have previously discussed, it is not only having a good Social Security check during retirement that matters. In addition to this, we need to have an overall plan to live the golden years in the best possible way.

Still, increasing the check should be paramount, since most of our income will come from Social Security in retirement. In order to increase it, you must follow two main steps:

  1. Increase the contribution values. There are two main contribution values. The first one is your salary as a worker. The higher your salary, the bigger your Social Security check in the future. The second of these elements is years worked. Social Security will take for your check the average of the 35 years with the highest salary. If we work less than that, each year not worked will lower the average a lot.
  2. Wait until age 70. This is impossible to avoid. To get the larger check of $4,558 in 2023, it is essential to wait until age 70 before applying for Social Security. Every year worked after age 67 will increase the check, so we must wait until 70 to maximize it. Working after 70 does not give any bonus.

Anyway, in the case of not being able to maximize these 2 elements, we can always look for other sources of income. A very good option is to sell everything we do not need. Using public transportation will also help us save money, as well as avoiding eating out in restaurants.

In order to have the best retirement possible, we should not only maximize our Social Security check. We must take into account the rest of the aspects that surround us in life.
